Chapter 15

Henry left not long after that, running back to the Stronghold office to grab food. He instructed me to close the library behind him and reopen it again at 5. Since I was hungry, I made a mental note not to be late.

I returned to the library, finding Wallace’s butt sticking out of the first-floor fireplace as he cleaned the hearth inside.

“Thanks for having my back there with the fairies,” I said with heavy sarcasm.

He scooted out to sniffle at me. “You’re the one who’s supposed to deal with patrons, not me.”

“You could have at least warned me what they’d be like.”

“I believe that experience is the best teacher.”

“Do you also believe in scrubbing places that are already clean?” I asked, pointing to the already spotless stones of the fireplace. “That thing doesn’t look like it’s been lit in ages.”

Wallace’s face suddenly twisted in anger. “That’s because it hasn’t, thanks to you.” He slammed his rag into the bucket.

“Whoa.” I’d clearly touched a nerve. “Are you saying I’m supposed to be lighting a fire in there?”

He pointed a long fingernail at me. “You’re in charge of lighting all the fixtures inside the library every day.”

“And I do,” I argued. “I switch on the hallway lights as soon as the patrons start coming in. I also light key areas when the sun goes down.”

“But you don’t light this fireplace when the dwarves are here,” he said with a “gotcha” voice. “Haven’t you noticed they never take off their sweaters?”

“I thought they just liked wearing them.”

“They’re cold,” he snapped. “Dwarves need a lot of heat to keep them warm. Clio always lit the fireplace so they’d be comfortable in the library.”

I threw my hands up. “Well, I’ll start doing that too, now that you’ve told me. I’m not a mind reader.”

“Clearly.” He gathered his bucket and rags and began shuffling off.

“Is there anything else I should be doing?” I asked his back.

He paused, grumbling something I couldn’t hear since he wouldn’t turn around.

I folded my arms over my chest. “You can complain all you want, but I can’t fix things that I don’t know need fixing.”

He flipped around. “There’s also the issue of my burrow.”

I frowned. “Your burrow?”

“Yes,” he said as if explaining to a child. “My burrow. Where I live inside the tree.”

I wracked my brain, but for the life of me, I couldn’t think of where Wallace’s burrow was inside Yggdrasil. “Okay then, lead me to your burrow, and I’ll help you.”

He stared at me in shock. “You can’t go down there. That’s my home.”

“Then how am I supposed to fix it?”

Wallace huffed. “I knew this was a waste of time.” He began storming off again.

“Wallace,” I called after him. “Please don’t go. I want to help.”

I thought he would ignore me, but he finally slowed in his tracks.

I didn’t waste my opportunity. “I’m new at all this. I’m sorry if I’m not getting everything right. Help me understand better so I can help you.”

Wallace let out a long-suffering sigh as he faced me once again.
